Following field camp, students transition to a campus semester at the University of Canterbury. There, students spend the semester fully integrated into university life and courses. Students enrol in four courses, one of which is FA's research methods courses. This course is just available to FA students and is not offered to other domestic or international students.
New Zealand values study/life balance. Universities will not be as intense as your home institutions. You will have much more free time to enjoy what New Zealand has to offer. FA believes you can learn best when you are supporting your wellbeing. As such, we have designed the program to take advantage of New Zealand's world-leading wellbeing activities. Below are a few frequently asked questions:
Where do we live? Students live at Ilam Apartments at the University of Canterbury. Students have their own room in 3-5 person apartments. Shared space includes a living room, kitchen, and bathroom. The University of Canterbury also has ample shared recreation space, including a campus recreation centre. The apartments are self-catered - which means you cook for yourself. Grocery stores are within walking distance of apartments.
What are classes like? Classes are a bit different than what you are used to. There will be fewer assessments and only 1 or 2 exams. You will be expected to keep up with readings and work, however, there will be less communication with the professors unless you are proactive. There may be more students in your classes as well.
What do we do on the weekends? Most students take advantage of the great clubs the University offers and explore New Zealand on the weekends. Clubs such as the Tramping (Hiking) Club, Canoe Club, and Climbing Club offer weekend trips. Within 1 hour from the University of Canterbury are world-class mountains. Students who go to Canterbury tend to value the outdoors and want to explore.
