Frontiers Abroad - Next Steps

1. Let us know you are joining us in Aotearoa New Zealand

Please email Max and let him know you will be joining us in New Zealand. You will also have to let the University of Canterbury know you are joining us. See below instructions - #5

Frontiers Abroad - Next Steps

2. Apply for VISA

Apply for your Visa:   In order to study in New Zealand you need to have a visa that gives you study rights.  Legally Frontiers Abroad and the University of Canterbury are not allowed to give VISA application advise. Summarizing from  the INZ website, there are two types of VISA's that give your study rights: (1) Student Visa and (2) the Working Holiday Visa. You must apply for and receive a  visa with study rights BEFORE travelling to New Zealand.

  • Student Visa: The  Student Visa is the typical visa study abroad students acquire.  This may be found by visiting https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas/options/study. When applying for your visa, you will be required to upload your "letter of offer" from the University of Canterbury. Please note that acceptance by the University does not guarantee that a student will be granted a visa by Immigration New Zealand. Full details of visa and regulations may be found on the Immigration New Zealand website: https://www.immigration.govt.nz.

A few notes for the Student Visa:

  1. To apply follow this link: https://www.immigration.govt.nz/new-zealand-visas/apply-for-a-visa. At the bottom of the page click - 1. Study 2. Less than 6 Months 3. Fee Paying Visa Student. On the next page click apply now and you will be told to make a realme account. This gets the process started!
  2. You are considered a full fee paying international student. Not an exchange student (see offer of place).
  3. You are taking 60 points - not 120
  4. The qualification/program you are applying for is a certificate of proficiency  (see offer of place).
  5. You need to prove you have funds to live in New Zealand while here. See the  VISA guide for the amount you need. If you have funds in an account with your name then you need to provide that information (Bank Statements, etc). If you do not have funds in your name, then your parents/guardians/other will need to fill out and upload form INZ1014 - Financial Undertaking Form.
  6. You need your offer of place from the University of Canterbury for the application. You will upload it to the system.
  7. DOWNLOAD THE BELOW VISA EXTENSION LETTER AND UPLOAD IT TO THE VISA APPLICATION. You do not need the visa extension letter for the working holiday visa - see below.
  8. DOWNLOAD THE BELOW TUITION LETTER  AND UPLOAD IT TO THE VISA APPLICATION.
  9. If you plan on arriving early then you must indicate on your visa application when you are entering New Zealand.
  10. Frontiers Abroad Provides you with Student Safe Insurance as part of the program.
  11. You can use 3 Harbour View Tce, Cass Bay, Christchurch as a contact address and +63 027 303 7076 as a contact phone number.

  • The Working Holiday Visa also gives you study rights for less than 6 months and enables you to work in New Zealand for a year. If you are planning on staying after the semester and want to work while in New Zealand you can consider the Working Holiday Visa. However, please refer to the Immigration New Zealand Website for the specifics and limitations on this Visa. For example, you can receive one working holiday visa for your life.  This is a simple visa application.

5. Enrolling at UC - Selecting classes

Enrolling at UC and choosing your courses

What is the next step for enrolment?

Completing your application to enrol is the next step towards enrolment (registration). You need to complete your application to enrol before you come to the University of Canterbury.

How to complete your application to enrol ?

Completing your application to enrol requires you to log in to myUC to confirm your details and the specific courses you intend to take. Information about courses can be found at https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/courseinfo/AdvancedSearch.aspx.

Option 1 : Online in myUC.  You need to register with myUC.

  1. Select https://myuc.canterbury.ac.nz/login to go to the login page.

  2. Select Create an account on the top left of the login page.

  3. Enter your name.

  4. Enter the email address. This was the email you provided to Max for the application and is on your offer of place from the University of Canterbury

  5. Create a password.

  6. Read the privacy statement and confirm you agree.

  7. Select the Create an Account button.

  8. We'll send an email for you to validate your email address.

Once you have accessed your myUC account, complete the application to enrol and add the courses you intend to take at UC.  You can search for courses here. Remember you are studying for Semester 1 (S1) not Semester 2 (S2).

Please note: After you select a course, it will automatically come back with you do not meet the pre-reqs. This is a default for all study abroad students. Someone from UC just needs to click a button to approve you. But this usually happens in December. Our students are rarely denied from taking classes they want.

6. LEarning Accomodations

If you receive/require learning accomodations while at the University of Canterbury you  need to submit an application prior to the start of the semeseter. Frontiers Abroad is not in charge nor has any influence on this process. Furthermore, we are not allowed to apply for you as you will need to provide potentially private information. To learn more bout this process and to apply please visit: https://www.canterbury.ac.nz/study/examinations/students-with-disabilities/
